Overview
This 2027 Peterbilt 589 Traditional is a Freedom 250 Special Edition day cab built for hauling machinery and heavy equipment. It is set up to pull a 53' flatbed trailer and has a gross combination weight rating of 160,000 lbs. It wears the Freedom 250 paint scheme, a three-color Axalta two-stage glass-effect finish in White, Freedom Red and Freedom Blue. A Freedom Red feature stripe runs over a red frame, with white fenders, hood top and cab roof.
Engine & Drivetrain
The engine is a Cummins X15 Production Series rated at 605 HP at 1,950 RPM and 2,050 lb-ft of torque at 1,000 RPM, governed at 2,000 RPM. It is a 2026 model year engine with 2024 series EPA emissions and idling compliance. The powertrain is optimized for performance in vocational and heavy-GCWR use. Typical operating speed is 75 MPH, and the vehicle speed limiter is set at 65.0 MPH or greater.
The engine runs on EMUX electronics architecture and includes a predictive cruise control package. The engine idle shutdown timer is disabled. Engine braking comes from a Jacobs compression brake, with controls on the right-hand column. A 12-pin remote PTO/throttle provision sits in the engine bay.
Electrical equipment starts with a PACCAR 160-amp brushed alternator and a PACCAR 12V starter. Four PACCAR Premium 12V dual-purpose batteries provide 2,920 CCA, with a battery jumper terminal mounted under the hood. A Kissling 300A cab power disconnect switch and a low voltage disconnect system protect the batteries.
Cooling, air and fuel handling are covered by a high efficiency cooling system, a 2-speed fan clutch and a 37.4 CFM air compressor. A 110–120V immersion block heater helps with cold starts. Fuel is filtered by a Davco 382 fuel/water separator and cooled by a fuel cooler. Air comes in through 15" premium stainless steel cowl-mounted air cleaners with slotted stainless caps.
The dual exhaust uses a single-module DPF/SCR mounted right-hand under cab. It exits through 42" tall, 7" chrome-plated steel standpipes with 45-degree curved tips, chrome exhaust pipes and a clear coat.
The transmission is an Eaton Fuller RTLO20918B 18-speed manual with a chrome shifter and an oil-to-water cooler. A heavy-duty input bearing supports PTO operation. The clutch is self-adjusting and pre-damped, with a remote release-bearing lube hose. Power reaches the axles through an SPL350 HD-XL driveline with two midship bearings and an SPL250 XL interaxle driveline. Two dash-mounted electric-over-air PTO controls are included. The rear axle ratio is 3.91.
Chassis & Axles
The wheelbase is 266", with a 99.9" front axle to back of cab, 166.1" cab to axle and 221.1" cab to end of frame. The frame uses 10-3/4" steel rails at 3/8" thickness, running to 354". It adds a full steel inner liner, zinc-coated anti-corrosion treatment, aluminum crossmembers and heavy-duty iron front spring brackets. The end of frame is tapered with a crossmember and a kingpin cutout. Maximum grade rating is 6%.
The front axle is a Meritor MFS20 wide-track steer axle rated at 20,000 lbs with a 3.5" drop. It rides on taper leaf springs, Tenneco shocks and 70 mm spacer blocks, with greasable spring pins. Steering is Sheppard HD94 dual-gear power steering with a frame-mounted reservoir and cooler.
The rear axle is a Meritor RT46-164E tandem rated at 46,000 lbs with 5/8" wall housings. It is paired with a Watson-Chalin SL2065 self-steering pusher axle rated at 20,000 lbs. The pusher is spaced 54" from the forward drive axle, stows higher when lifted for ground clearance, and is controlled by a lift axle regulator with a switch and gauge in the dash.
Engineering ratings are 20,000 lbs GAWR front, 20,000 lbs on the first intermediate axle, 23,000 lbs on the second intermediate axle and 23,000 lbs GAWR rear. GVWR is 80,000 lbs.
Braking is Bendix ADB22X air disc on the steer and tandem drive axles, with pad dust shields. Hubs are PHP10 Preset+: iron on the steer axle, aluminum on the drive axles, and aluminum with cast drums on the pusher. The braking system adds Bendix ESP electronic stability with ATC, 6S6M ABS with an off-road switch, and a pneumatic park brake. The tandem has a speed-interlocked differential lock with a separate dash control for full lock. Tire pressure monitoring and synthetic axle lubricant on all axles are also included.
Suspension
The rear suspension is Peterbilt Air Trac, rated at 46,000 lbs with 54" axle spacing. It includes a dash-mounted dump switch with a suspension indicator light.
Cab & Interior
The aluminum day cab has a 131" BBC aluminum hood with a polished crown and spring tilt assist, plus polished stainless rocker panels and 2" fender lips. The Platinum interior is finished in Alpine Gray with a rubber floor. A thermal insulation package and cab air suspension keep the ride quiet and comfortable. Keyless entry, power door locks, power windows and a combination fresh air heater/AC are standard. Glass includes dark tint, a one-piece curved windshield and a fixed 3-piece rear window, and a pull-out work tray sits over the glove box.
The driver and passenger get Peterbilt LX Premium air ride seats with high backs and black leather, red seat belts, and an armrest on each seat. The leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel carries the Peterbilt logo and audio/cruise controls on a tilt/telescoping column.
Infotainment comes from a 7" display with Apple CarPlay, a 4-speaker midlevel package, and a Cobra 29LX CB with weatherband plus a CB antenna. The truck has global telematics hardware, J1939 telematics wiring provisions, and a 5-year SmartLinq remote diagnostics subscription.
A 15" digital cluster shows engine oil, transmission and both drive axle oil temperatures, with a guarded rear axle heat gauge. It also displays turbo boost, engine percent torque and air filter restriction. Air pressure readouts cover brake application, suspension load, the trailer reservoir and the pusher axle, alongside engine and PTO hourmeters.
On the exterior, the cab has a stainless V-style sunvisor and West Coast-style 7"x18" heated, motorized stainless mirrors. Two 8" heated convex mirrors and a passenger look-down mirror round out visibility. Four roof-mounted round air horns (two 23" and two 26") sit up top, and a removable bug screen sits behind the grille. Intermittent wipers and an NFPA-compliant exterior grab handle are included. Safety equipment includes a variable 87–112 dB backup alarm, a fire extinguisher and a triangle reflector kit.
Body & Equipment
The fifth wheel is a Holland FW70 top plate on a Holland severe-duty 72" air slide, outboard mounted at an 8.6"–9.25" height. It has a left-hand release and slide controls, with a fixed setting 27" behind the bogie centerline. A frame-mounted deck plate and access package covers both sides, with polished deck plate steps.
Air and trailer equipment includes a heated Bendix AD-HF EP air dryer with a coalescing filter and extended purge. The polished aluminum air tanks are mounted outside the frame rails and have pull cords. Trailer connections are 15' straight 3-in-1 lines with two 7-way plugs and a QCP socket, run through a chrome hose tenna. A self-returning dash-mounted trailer hand valve is included.
Fuel capacity comes from two polished 26" aluminum tanks. The right-side tank holds 100 gallons and is split, carrying 50 gallons of fuel in its rear section, with an added thread boss on the lower hydraulic tank. The left-side tank holds 80 gallons. All tank straps are polished. A 14-gallon heavy-duty DEF tank on the left side has a polished stainless cover.
The chassis carries a chrome steel Texas-style bumper with two tow points. On the left is a polished aluminum stylized battery box with a non-slip step, and on the right a complete aftertreatment cab entry step. Mudflaps hang on stainless premium hangers.
Lighting is all LED. It includes heated LED pod headlights with integral turn signals, five LED bullet marker lights and an LED oval stop/turn/tail/backup light in the frame taper. Mirror-mounted LED turn signals and two flush-mounted LED load lights are also fitted. Wiring provisions are in place for fog lights, auxiliary under-cab and air-cleaner lights, a beacon/strobe, and an extra load light. Two additional dash switches and two spare electric-over-air rocker switches are also included.
