This 2027 Peterbilt Model 589 Traditional is a tandem-axle day cab tractor. It is spec'd for general freight service pulling a 40' van trailer, with 100% highway operation and a 6% maximum grade rating. Its GVWR is 53,200 lbs and its GCW rating is 110,000 lbs.
Engine & Drivetrain
Power comes from an X15 Performance Series engine rated 565 HP @ 1,900 RPM (governed @ 1,900), with 2,050 lb-ft @ 1,000 RPM. It is a model year 2026 engine meeting 2024 emissions standards. The powertrain is optimized for performance, for vocational applications or heavy GCWR. Typical operating speed is 75 MPH, with maximum cruise and accelerator vehicle speeds of 75 MPH. It has a Predictive Cruise Control package, a Jacobs compression brake with controls on the RH column, and brake lights disabled during engine brake use.
The Eaton RTLO20918B 18-speed transmission has an oil-to-water cooler, a chrome manual shifter, a main transmission rear support and a heavy-duty input bearing for PTO operation. The clutch is self-adjusting and pre-damped, with a remote release-bearing lube hose mounted under the hood. The driveline is an SPL250 Lite with one midship bearing plus an SPL170 XL interaxle driveline, both service-free. Dual dash-mounted single-acting electric-over-air PTO controls are fitted, with a PTO maximum engine speed of 1,400 RPM and a remote PTO/throttle 12-pin provision in the engine bay.
The electrical system includes a PACCAR 160-amp brushed alternator, a PACCAR 12V starter and three PACCAR Premium 12V dual-purpose batteries rated 2,190 CCA. It also has a low voltage disconnect system and an in-cab power disconnect switch. Other engine equipment includes a high-efficiency cooling system, a 2-speed fan clutch, a 110–120V immersion block heater and an 18.7 CFM aspirated air compressor. Air comes through dual 15" premium stainless cowl-mounted air cleaners with slotted stainless caps. The fuel system has a PACCAR extended-service fuel/water separator with fuel heat, plus a fuel cooler. Exhaust is a Dual SOC DPF/SCR single module mounted RH under the cab, exiting through dual 7" chrome-plated steel standpipes, 48" tall, with 45-degree curved tips. The engine idle shutdown timer is disabled, with the ambient temperature overrule enabled. Engine protection shutdown is enabled, and the truck uses EMUX electronics architecture.
Chassis & Axles
The wheelbase measures 230", with a 131" BBC, 130.10" cab-to-axle and 184.10" cab-to-end-of-frame. The frame uses 10-5/8" steel rails at 5/16" thickness with aluminum crossmembers. The end of the frame is tapered, with a crossmember and kingpin cutout.
Up front is a Dana Spicer D1321IL wide-track axle rated 13,200 lbs with a 3.5" drop. Steering is Sheppard HD94 power steering with a frame-mounted reservoir. The rear is a Dana Spicer DSH40 High Performance 40 tandem rated 40,000 lbs, with a 3.70 ratio and tandem diff locks with speed interlock. All axles use synthetic lube. GAWR is 13,200 lbs front and 20,000 lbs on each drive axle.
Meritor EX+ LS air disc brakes are fitted on the steer and tandem drive axles, with severe-service rotors and PHP10 iron Preset+ hubs. Safety systems include Bendix ESP electronic stability with ATC and an ATC deactivation switch, ABS 6S6M with an off-road switch, a tire pressure monitoring system and a pneumatic park brake.
Suspension
The front uses a Peterbilt front air leaf rated 13,200 lbs, with a dual height control valve and Tenneco steer axle shocks. The rear is a lightweight Peterbilt Low Air Leaf rated 40,000 lbs with 52" axle spacing. It has a steel suspension insert for up to 77" overhang, a single leveling valve on the forward drive axle and four HD Truckmaster shocks. A dash-mounted suspension dump switch with indicator light and a trailer air suspension dump switch are included, along with cab air suspension.
Cab & Interior
The aluminum day cab pairs with a 131" BBC aluminum hood with a polished crown, spring tilt assist and severe-service hood reinforcements. Inside is a Platinum interior in Alpine Gray with a rubber floor. Driver and passenger get Peterbilt LX Premium Level air-ride, high-back seats in black leather. The driver seat includes the Driver Seat Comfort Package and armrests on both sides, and the passenger seat has a LH armrest. The premium leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel carries the PB logo and audio/cruise controls, on a tilt/telescoping column.
Technology includes a 7" infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and a midlevel 4-speaker package. There is a Uniden PC78LTX CB radio mounted in the header, with dual 48" CB antennas on the LH and RH mirrors. The truck also has global telematics hardware and a 5-year SmartLINQ RD subscription. The 15" digital instrument cluster displays engine, transmission and both drive axle oil temperatures, with a guard for the rear axle heat gauge. It also shows turbo boost, engine percent torque, air filter restriction, and brake application, trailer reservoir and suspension air pressures. Secondary fuel level, the engine hourmeter and the PTO hourmeter are on the cluster as well.
Comfort and convenience features include keyless entry, power door locks and windows, and self-canceling turn signals. The cab has a combination fresh-air heater/AC with an added fine particulate filter and a thermal insulation package. Glass includes dark window tint, a fixed 3-piece rear window and a one-piece curved windshield. Inside you'll also find ambient lighting, dual USB charging ports, a pull-out tray over the glove box, a floor-mounted cup holder, a rear-wall map pocket and two additional dash switches wired behind the dash.
The exterior features a chrome steel Texas-style bumper with two tow points, polished stainless rocker panels and a stainless V-style outside sunvisor. It also has a removable bugscreen behind the grille, a textured exterior entry grab handle and an air horn under the cab. Mirrors are heated, motorized 7"x18" stainless West Coast units, with two heated 8" convex mirrors and a look-down mirror over the passenger door.
Lighting includes heated LED pod headlights with integral turn signals and daytime running lights. There are five LED bullet marker lights, mirror-mounted LED turn signals, LED oval stop/turn/tail/backup lights in the EOF crossmember and two flush-mount LED load lights. Switches and wiring are provided for fog lights, a beacon/strobe and auxiliary under-cab lights. Safety equipment includes a variable adjusting backup alarm (87–112 dB), a mounted fire extinguisher and a triangle reflector kit.
Paint is Axalta two-stage, two-color effect metallic/pearl in the Seminole paint scheme. Blue (L6230EY) covers the cab, hood top, cab roof and fenders. Gunmetal (L0280EY) is the second color and feature stripe. The frame is Black (L0001EA).
Body & Equipment
The Holland FW35 fifth wheel top plate rides on a 36" Holland heavy-duty air slide with outboard mounting and slide controls. It has a LH release and a height of 6.6"–7", and is set 5" behind the bogie centerline.
Fuel capacity comes from a RH 26" aluminum 120-gallon split tank holding 70 gallons of fuel, fuel forward, plus a LH 26" aluminum 80-gallon tank. Both tanks and all tank straps are polished. The fuel system also has dual draw/return shutoff valves, perforated anti-siphon devices, an additional sending unit in the secondary tank and an extra lower thread boss. A 24-gallon DEF tank is mounted LH back of cab with a polished stainless cover.
The polished, stylized aluminum battery box sits LH under the cab with a non-slip step, and a matching aftertreatment cab-entry step is on the RH side. A frame-mounted deck plate and access package runs on both sides, with polished access steps.
The air system includes a Bendix AD-HF air dryer with heater and coalescing filter, polished aluminum air tanks outside the frame rails, an auxiliary air tank and pull cords on all tanks. Trailer connections include 16' straight AE lines with two cast 7-way plugs, a chrome hose tenna on a horizontal double-spring mounting bar, and gladhands, plug and ISO holder mounted back of cab. Stainless braceless quarter fenders and Peterbilt rear mudflaps with premium stainless hangers finish the back of the chassis.
Tires & Wheels
The front runs CN 16-ply 11R22.5 HSL3 tires on Alcoa 885657 22.5x8.25 high-polish aluminum severe-service wheels. The rear carries eight CN 14-ply 11R22.5 HDR2+ tires on Alcoa 880677 22.5x8.25 high-polish aluminum wheels. Wheels front and rear have mirror-polish outer surfaces and a Dura-Bright finish on the outer wheels. Wheel guards are fitted on the steer and tandem axles.
