This new 2027 Peterbilt Model 589 Traditional day cab tractor is built for heavy-haul and bottom-dump work. It has a performance-tuned Cummins X15, an 18-speed automated transmission with off-road shift calibration, and a red Axalta two-stage paint finish over a black frame. The wheelbase is 223.0 inches, with 123.0 inches cab to axle, 178.0 inches cab to end of frame, and 100.0 inches axle to back of cab.
Engine & Drivetrain
The Cummins X15 Prod Series engine (2024 emissions) is rated at 565 HP at 1,950 RPM, governed at 2,000 RPM, with 1,850 lb-ft of torque at 1,000 RPM. The powertrain is optimized for performance, with a typical operating speed of 70 MPH, an effective VSL setting of 65.0 MPH or greater, and a Predictive Cruise Control package. It is CARB and EPA compliant and has EMUX electronics architecture, engine protection shutdown, and an engine idle shutdown timer with ambient temperature overrule. Other equipment includes a Jacobs compression brake with controls on the right-hand column, a 2-speed fan clutch for frequent start/stops, a high-efficiency cooling system, and a 37.4 CFM air compressor. It also has a PACCAR fuel/water separator with an extended service interval and 12V fuel filter heat, an immersion-type 110–120V block heater, and a remote 12-pin PTO/throttle provision in the engine bay. Intake is through 15-inch premium stainless steel cowl-mounted air cleaners with slotted stainless caps. Exhaust is dual, with a single-module DPF/SCR mounted under the cab on the right side, chrome exhaust pipes, and 7-inch chrome-plated steel standpipes 36 inches tall with 45-degree curved tips. The transmission is an Eaton Endurant XD Pro 18-speed automated (EXDP-18F118D) with an oil-to-water cooler and a right-hand column-mounted shifter. It has a performance shift calibration, a second off-road shift calibration, a dash-mounted Rock Free Mode switch, and Neutral Coast Mode at pedal only. Power runs through an RPL25 SD driveline with one midship bearing and an RPL20 interaxle driveline. A dash-mounted single-acting electric-over-air PTO control is also included. Electrical equipment includes a PACCAR 160-amp brushed alternator, a PACCAR 12V starter, and three PACCAR Premium 12V dual-purpose batteries rated at 2,190 CCA total. There is also a battery jumper terminal under the hood, a Kissling 300A cab power disconnect switch, and a low-voltage disconnect system.
Chassis & Axles
The frame uses 10-3/4-inch steel rails to 354 inches, 3/8 inch thick, with zinc-coated anti-corrosion treatment, aluminum crossmembers, heavy-duty iron front spring brackets, and a tapered tractor end of frame with a crossmember and kingpin cutout. The front axle is a Dana Spicer E1322IL rated 13,200 lbs with a 3.5-inch drop and wide-track configuration, with Sheppard HD94 power steering and a frame-mounted reservoir. The rear axles are Dana Spicer DSH40 High Performance tandems rated 40,000 lbs, with a 3.90 ratio and synthetic lubricant in all axles. Tandem diff locks have a speed interlock and separate dash controls. Bendix ADB22X air disc brakes are fitted front and rear on PHP10 aluminum preset hubs, with pad dust shields on all axles. Safety systems include Bendix ESP electronic stability with ATC, 6S6M ABS, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a pneumatic park brake. For the trailer, there is an ISO 3731 trailer ABS power connector next to the J560 connector and a 15-foot straight ISO cable.
Suspension
The front suspension uses taper leaf springs rated 13,200 lbs with Tenneco shocks, greasable spring pins, and 40 mm spring spacer blocks. The rear suspension is a lightweight Peterbilt Low Air Leaf rated 40,000 lbs with 52-inch axle spacing and a single leveling valve on the forward drive axle. A dash-mounted dump switch with an indicator light lets the driver deflate the suspension. The cab rides on air suspension.
Cab & Interior
The aluminum cab sits behind a 131-inch BBC aluminum hood with a polished crown and spring tilt assist. The Platinum interior comes in Alpine Gray with a rubber floor instead of carpet. The steering wheel is a premium leather-wrapped multi-function wheel with audio and cruise controls on a tilt/telescoping column. The main instrument panel is a 15-inch digital cluster that shows trans clutch temperature, air filter restriction, trailer reservoir pressure, secondary fuel level, engine and PTO hourmeters, turbo boost, and engine percent torque. Separate backlit 52 mm gauges with bright bezels cover front and rear drive axle oil temperature (with guards), engine oil temperature, air suspension pressure, fuel filter restriction, and tractor brake application. Two extra dash switches are pre-wired. Two bottom-dump trailer dump switches are wired to a Berg 4-way socket at the back of the cab. Audio and communications include a ConcertClass AM/FM/WB radio with 3.5 mm aux, satellite radio, Bluetooth phone and audio, a USB port, a four-speaker midlevel package, and a header-mounted Uniden PC78LTX CB with antenna mounts on both mirrors. Safety items include a triangle reflector kit, a fire extinguisher mounted outboard of the driver seat, and a variable 87–112 dB backup alarm.
Body & Equipment
The Holland FW35 fifth wheel is a no-tilt convertible top plate on a Holland heavy-duty 30-inch air slide, with outboard mounting, a left-hand release, slide controls, and an 8.6–9.25-inch fifth wheel height. A frame-mounted deck plate and access package is on the right side. Trailer connections include 15-foot straight 3-in-1 air and electric lines with two 7-way plugs and a chrome hose tenna. A dash switch powers the J560 with key on. Air system features include a heated Bendix AD-HF EP air dryer with a coalescing filter and extended purge, polished aluminum air tanks outside the frame rails, pull cords on all tanks, nylon chassis hose, and a self-returning dash-mounted brake hand valve. Fuel capacity comes from polished 26-inch aluminum tanks behind the cab: a 100-gallon right-hand split tank with 65 gallons of fuel in the rear section, and a 90-gallon left-hand tank. Tank straps are polished, and there is a sending unit in the secondary tank. A small 14-gallon DEF tank with a polished stainless cover is mounted on the left side rearward of the fuel tank. The bumper is a chromed steel Texas-style unit with two tow points. Other equipment includes a polished aluminum stylized left-hand battery box with a non-slip step and heavy-duty reinforcement, a right-hand aluminum non-slip aftertreatment cab entry step, braceless stainless quarter fenders, and rear mudflaps on premium stainless hangers. Lighting includes projector headlights with integral turn signals, five LED bullet marker lights, daytime running lights, self-canceling turn signals, LED stop/turn/tail/backup lights at the end of frame, LED turn signals on the mirrors, and two flush-mounted LED load lights. The truck is pre-wired for fog lights, auxiliary lights on the air cleaners, and a beacon or strobe. The cab, hood, hood top, roof, and fenders are red Axalta two-stage paint, and the frame is black.
Tires & Wheels
The steer tires are Bridgestone R283S Ecopia 11R22.5 16-ply. The eight rear tires are Bridgestone M760 Ecopia 11R22.5 14-ply. Wheels are Accuride 43644SP 22.5x8.25 aluminum in standard polish with Accu-Armor finish, on both sides of the steer and tandem drive wheels. Wheel guards on the tandem axle sit between the brake drum and wheel and between the wheels.
