Overview
This new Peterbilt Model 589 Traditional day cab tractor is configured for construction dump service, on and off highway, and is built to haul construction materials with a semi-end dump trailer. The powertrain is optimized for performance in vocational and heavy GCWR applications. The truck is rated at an 80,000 lb GCW with a maximum grade rating of 6%.
Engine & Drivetrain
Power comes from a Cummins X15 rated at 565 HP at 1,950 RPM, governed at 2,000 RPM, producing 1,850 lb-ft of torque at 1,000 RPM. It is a 2024-emissions engine that is CARB emission compliant and meets both CARB and EPA idling requirements. It is paired with an Eaton Fuller RTLO20918B 18-speed manual transmission with an oil-to-water cooler, a chrome manual shifter, and a self-adjusting, pre-damped clutch. The driveline includes an RPL20 interaxle driveline and an RPL25 SD driveline with one midship bearing, and a dash-mounted electric-over-air PTO control is included. Rear axle ratio is 3.70, with a typical operating speed of 70 MPH and a road speed limiter setting of 65 MPH or greater.
A Jacobs compression brake handles engine braking, with controls on the right-hand column, and the brake lights are set not to activate when the engine brake is applied. The truck also has predictive cruise control, the EMUX electronics architecture, engine protection shutdown, and an idle shutdown timer with ambient temperature overrule. A 12-pin remote PTO/throttle provision is located in the engine bay.
The electrical system includes a PACCAR 160-amp brushed alternator, a PACCAR 12V starter, and three PACCAR premium 12V dual-purpose batteries totaling 2,190 CCA. It also has a battery jumper terminal mounted under the hood, a Kissling 300A cab power disconnect switch, and a low voltage disconnect system. A 110–120V immersion block heater, a 2-speed fan clutch for frequent start/stop duty, a high-efficiency cooling system, and an 18.7 CFM aspirated air compressor round out the engine package. Fuel is filtered through a PACCAR extended-service fuel/water separator with fuel heat and 12V heat for the fuel filter.
Air intake runs through 15" premium stainless steel cowl-mounted air cleaners with slotted stainless caps. The dual exhaust uses a single-module DPF/SCR mounted right-hand under the cab. It exits through 7" chrome-plated steel standpipes, 36" tall with 45-degree curved cut tips and chrome with clear coat.
Chassis & Axles
Engineering-assigned ratings are 13,200 lbs GAWR on the front axle and 20,000 lbs on each of the two drive axles, for a GVWR of 53,200 lbs. Wheelbase is 223", with a 99.9" bumper-to-back-of-cab, 123.1" cab-to-axle, and 178.1" cab-to-end-of-frame. The frame uses 10-3/4" steel rails to 354" with 3/8" rail thickness. The rails are zinc coated and anti-corrosion treated, with aluminum crossmembers and a tapered tractor end-of-frame with a kingpin cutout.
Up front is a Dana Spicer E1322IL axle rated at 13,200 lbs, with a 3.5" drop and a wide track. It runs on taper leaf springs with Tenneco shocks, greasable spring pins, and 40 mm spring spacer blocks. Steering is handled by a Sheppard HD94 power steering gear with a frame-mounted reservoir.
The rear axles are Dana Spicer DSH40 High Performance 40 units rated at 40,000 lbs, and all axles run synthetic lubricant. Every axle has PHP10 aluminum PreSet+ hubs and air disc brakes with pad dust shields. Tandem differential locks with speed interlock and a separate dash control for full-lock traction provide added traction. Safety systems include the Bendix ESP electronic stability program with ATC, a 6S6M anti-lock braking system, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Fuel capacity comes from two polished 26" aluminum tanks with center fill and polished straps. The 100-gallon right-hand tank is split, with 65 gallons of fuel in the rear section and an additional sending unit for the secondary tank. The left-hand tank holds 90 gallons. A heavy-duty 14-gallon DEF tank is mounted on the left side behind the cab, rearward of the fuel tank, under a polished stainless steel cover, with a DEF-to-fuel ratio between 1:1 and 2:1. A stylized aluminum battery box on the left side has a non-slip step and heavy-duty step reinforcement. The battery and tool boxes are polished, and an aluminum non-slip aftertreatment cab entry step is fitted on the right side.
Suspension
The rear suspension is a lightweight Peterbilt Low Air Leaf rated at 40,000 lbs with 52" axle spacing. It has a single leveling valve located on the forward drive axle and a dash-mounted dump switch with indicator light.
Cab & Interior
The aluminum day cab has a 131" BBC aluminum hood with a polished crown and spring tilt assist. The interior is Platinum in Alpine Gray with a rubber floor. SmartSound cab insulation, cab air suspension, and Peterbilt keyless entry are included.
Both seats are Peterbilt LX premium-level, high-back, air ride seats in black leather, and the driver seat is heated. The driver has left and right armrests, and the passenger has a left armrest. A premium leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel with audio and cruise controls sits on an adjustable tilt/telescoping column. The cab has a one-piece curved windshield with intermittent electric wipers, dark window tint, a fixed one-piece rear window, power windows and locks, and a combination fresh air heater and air conditioner.
Audio and communications include a ConcertClass AM/FM/WB radio with 3.5 aux input, satellite radio, Bluetooth phone and audio, a USB port, a dual USB charging port, and a four-speaker mid-level speaker package. A Uniden PC78LTX CB radio is mounted in the header, with antenna mounts on both mirrors, and global telematics hardware is installed. A pull-out work tray over the glove box, a rear wall map pocket, and auto-reset circuit protection add everyday convenience. A fire extinguisher outboard of the driver seat, a triangle reflector kit, and a variable 87–112 dB backup alarm cover safety.
The 15" digital instrument cluster uses bright bezel gauges. It includes dedicated 52 mm backlit gauges for engine oil temperature, front and rear drive axle oil temperature (with gauge guards), air suspension pressure, fuel filter restriction, and tractor brake application. The digital display also shows transmission oil temperature, air filter restriction with increased full indication, trailer reservoir pressure, secondary fuel level, turbo boost, percent torque, and engine and PTO hour meters. Four additional dash switches are pre-wired behind the dash.
The exterior of the cab has a stainless steel V-style sunvisor and a textured, NFPA-compliant exterior grab handle. It is fitted with 7"x18" heated, motorized stainless steel West Coast mirrors, dual 8" heated stainless convex mirrors, and a passenger-side look-down mirror. An air horn is mounted under the cab, and a removable bugscreen sits behind the grille.
Body & Equipment
The fifth wheel is a Holland FW35 no-tilt convertible top plate set at the centerline of the bogie, with an 8.6"–9.25" height and a left-hand release. It rides on a Holland heavy-duty 30" air slide with outboard mounting and slide controls. A frame-mounted deck plate and access package is fitted on the right side. Two dump switches for a bottom dump trailer are wired to a Berg 4-way socket at the back of cab, along with an ISO 3731 trailer ABS power connector next to the J560 connector and a 15' straight ISO cable with 7-way plugs. The air system uses a Bendix AD-HF EP air dryer with heater, coalescing filter, and extended purge. It also has polished aluminum air tanks outside the frame rails, natural aluminum tanks under the box and painted behind the cab, pull cords on all tanks, nylon chassis hose, and a self-returning dash-mounted brake hand valve. Stainless steel braceless quarter fenders and Peterbilt rear mudflaps on premium stainless hangers finish the back of the tractor. A chromed steel Texas-style bumper with two tow points finishes the front.
Lighting includes projector-module headlights with integral turn signals, daytime running lights, and five LED bullet marker lights. The truck also has bracket-mounted LED stop/turn/tail/backup lights, additional LED turn signals on the mirrors, two flush-mounted LED load lights at the back of cab, and self-canceling turn signals. The wiring is set up for future fog lights, a beacon/strobe, and auxiliary lights on the dual air cleaners. Paint is a two-stage Axalta finish in Viper Red across the cab, hood, hood top, cab roof, and fenders, with a black frame.
